Redefining and Reviving Spanish Architecture at Hotel Californian

{ THE HOTEL }

Recently, my husband and I were combining my 20 year high school reunion with some work, which had us drive along the coast from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Along the way we stopped off at many popular destinations, one being Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara area has so many fantastic local attractions one can take advantage of, from the gorgeous waterfront, amazing restaurants, the Funk Zone, Union Station, surfing, wine tasting, wine tasting…and did I say wine tasting?

We decided to stay at the divine Hotel Californian while there. This hotel has been not only awarded Hot List 2018 Conde Nast Traveler but also The It List 2018 Travel + Leisure. If you’ve heard about this charming hotel then you already know what it offers, but if it’s the first time then I highly recommend checking out this beauty. With it’s modern Moorish and Moroccan influence and Art Deco touch, nothing goes unnoticed as you make your way to their stunning rooftop pool with mini bar to lounge at.

{ ROOMS & SUITES }

The designer behind the custom furnishings and design which you will find in each room is Martyn Lawrence Bullard. He has worked with everyone from the Kardashians, Alessandra Ambrosio to Ellen Pompeo. This guy is truly talented! Rooms range from 300 – 1750 sq feet (the presidential suite), pending on category, and are equipped with:

Moroccan inspired tile wainscoting
Bronze oil-rubbed bath fixtures
Mashrabiya patterned bathroom vanities and closet doors
Premium cocktail cars
Gourmet snacks
Nespresso coffee makers
Hi-Def TVs

The hotel has a very interesting history as the structure of the property is in fact the original Hotel Californian structure. Only one week after opening its doors it was destroyed by an earthquake and thus the hotel needed to be revived. In order to pay homage to it’s foundation, Bullard combined new structures with the original building, keeping true to the Spanish Colonial vibe and incorporating the more modern Moorish and Moroccan influence. You will find beautiful details as it is an extremely custom designed hotel. Not your cookie cutter experience by any means. With dining, spa and a beautiful backdrop for weddings if you are getting married, Hotel Californian surely has something for everyone!
